Working in the UK & Ireland Registration Requirements:
To register to work as a medical professional in the UK or Ireland you need to:
- Be a national of an EU country or be married to a national of an EU country
- Have undertaken a recognised medical course that meets the relevant EU directive.
- Or, if you have undertaken a recognised medical course prior to the EU directive becoming effective, 3 years experience within the past 5 years.
- Provide documents covering: proof of your degree course, work experience, good standing within your profession, references and that you do not have a criminal record
As well as these registration requirements, you will also need to:
- Have very good written and spoken English language skills – see this page for more details of the English language requirements.
- Obtain a “Workers registration certificate”. Our current understanding from the Home Office is that this will be issued if and when you get a job.
- Undertake a medical examination
Professional Registration
Applicants for posts requiring professional registration need to register with the appropriate regulatory body.
If you are registered in your home country, but do not have UK registration, some NHS employers may provide support in achieving UK registration. The links below provide further information about regulation requirements.
